On Tuesday the 18th of November I attended a luncheon at the Sofitel in Brisbane for the Queensland Telstra Women’s Business Awards as I was a finalist for the PricewaterhouseCoopers Young Business Women’s Award.

It was amazing to be in a room with 500 of the most powerful business women in Queensland. Labor State MP Margaret Keech, Minister for Women was present standing in for Premier Anna Bligh. It was also lovely to catch up with Anne Fulwood who was MCing the event again.

Professor Paula Barrett, Director of Pathways Health and Research Centre, was named the 2008 Telstra Queensland Business Woman of the Year. I had the pleasure of conversing with Paula the night before, she is a very motivated and inspirational woman;

Paula’s Queensland-based international consultancy-based clinic was founded in 2003, and provides resilience and life-skills programs to families and school communities. With a focus on coping with anxiety, depression, and stressful situations, Pathways Health and Research Centre’s internationally recognised programs provide a range of life-enhancing services for everyone from children to adults.

Half way through the presentations I had to go on stage to receive my Finalist Award, it’s all very nerve racking as you don’t know if you may make have to make a victory speech. Unfortunately I didn’t win this year but looked very glamorous thanks to the assistance of one of my clients. Julies Mobile Hair Salon services the Caboolture and Brisbane areas and comes to you, so it was fantastic to have my hair styled and makeup applied in the motel before the function.

Queensland Telstra Business Awards 2008

{ September 13th, 2008 }

by Jeanette Maynes

Wow what a big night was had at the ballroom of the Sofitel in Brisbane for the Queensland 2008 Telstra Business Awards. Design House Fraser Coast was one of the 28 finalists out of over 4,500 applications statewide. Our host was Anne Fulwood and we were a Finalist in the Palm Micro-Business Award for businesses with five employees or fewer. We were first onstage for the evening to receive our Finalist Award.

Then the overall winner was announced and unfortunately we were unsuccessful this time but were extremely honoured just to be a Finalist and among all the other elite businesses and Finalists in the room.

A big ‘Congratulations’ to Mumentum who won the category and the two other finalists hottie.com.au and River City Cruises.
I’m glad our category was announced first as I could then relax and enjoy the evening knowing I didn’t have to do a speech in front of 500 people! The food was delicious, the drinks flowed and the conversation lively and interesting. Afterwards I spoke with Anne Fulwood about her Media Consultancy Company and Lote Tuqiri who was staying at the Sofitel to play football today (Wallabies Vs the All Blacks) Go the Wallabies!

Design House awardsby Jeanette Maynes

Last night, we attended the Fraser Coast Business Awards at the Carriers Arms Hotel in Maryborough. Last year, at the same event Design House won the award for Other Services

This year, Design House came up again, to win the Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce Special Commendation Award. As we went there with no expectations this was a prestigious award to win! I was impressed to see the other successful business owners / operators even some of our clients as it is wonderful to be recognised by your peers. A Big Congratulations to BOZMAC (Tilt Slide Truck Specialists) one of our clients, on their award as I personally know how hard they work on the growth of their business.

The food, service, presentation and organisation of the event were spot on, a job well done by Kerri Everingham from the Chronicle and the Carriers Arms in Maryborough. Unfortunately the directions to wait out the front for the bus home were not clear. As I waited at the front of the event with others, not out the front of the premises on the street, we were left behind in Maryborough! An amusing lesson learnt for next year, though I hope Hervey Bay may have the opportunity to host this event in 2008.

A big thank you to the  Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce, your support and acknowledgment of our business growth and achievements through this award is thoroughly appreciated and a great honour. I feel we had better consider the possibility of joining to show our support and appreciation for the community / business work the Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce performs in our area.
